Thursday Thirteen: My Soundtrack

13 Songs On My Soundtrack

I loved this meme when Gina Ardito did it a couple weeks ago for her Thursday Thirteen. My only problem was deciding which music collection to use.

My laptop only has instrumental music: Opus 2. Waltz # 1 and Violin Concerto In F, RV 296 – 3. Allegro don’t sound that interesting for this. I could have used my iPod shuffle (not the one that went through the wash) but I wanted to be able to see the song titles and artists. I could have loaded up the netdrive’s collection, but there’s over 14,000 tracks on there and many of them are more DH’s music than mine. So, that left the collection on my desktop machine. Definitely more me, but also radically eclectic. Funny how none of the Arabia Belly Dancing music came up (don’t ask, I like stuff with lots of rhythm).

If your life were a movie, what would the soundtrack be?

Open your music library (iTunes, winamp, media player, iPod). Put it on shuffle. Press play. For every section, type the song that’s playing. Next section : press the next button. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool. Play it as it comes up.

Okay, so here goes…

1. Opening Credits: Walking On the Moon – The Police

Kinda bouncy, kinda fun. Works for me. “Giant steps are what you take / Walking on the moon / I hope my legs don’t break / Walking on the moon” Right. I need to remind my self to take Baby Steps.

2. Waking Up: Good Night and Go – Imogen Heap

Hey now! Why do I have a feeling that Amanda Marshall’s Sunday Morning After is going to be in here somewhere too? I so do not derserve this slander!

3. Falling in Love: Till I Don’t Know Who I Am – Rory McLeod

Ah, a boot stompin’, harmonica blowin’, rockin’ good time. Saw this Englishman live at a Music Festival in Kerrville, TX a long time ago. Amazing. Picked up a CD with the same name on it… whoo, big surprise! Not the same guy at all.

4. Breaking Up: Who’s To Blame – Ozomatli

Good question. Probably a moot question by now.

5. Life’s Okay: And She Was – The Talking Heads

I don’t know what it is about this song, but it’s one of my all-time favorites.

6. Mental Breakdown: The Cat Came Back – The Muppets

This song is a certain definition of mental breakdown. Especially after a weekend of camping with a bunch of 7-10 year olds who keep asking DH to play it just ONE more time!

7. Flashback: Predictably Unpredictable – Urban Species featuring Imogen Heap

I don’t think I’ve even listened to this song, but the title’s pretty accurate. Nothing’s for sure but a definite maybe.

8. Getting Back Together: Love Like A Rock (In a Stormy Sea) – Rory McLeod

Same harmonica player, not the other one I got by mistake. Huh. Maybe iTunes has a thing for him today.

9. Wedding: She Will Be Loved – Maroon 5

Sappy pop crap. It’s amazing that I can even stand to listen to this song any more. I liked it the first 10 times I heard it on the radio. The last 10 kabillionth, not so much.

10. Birth of Child: The Obvious Child – Paul Simon

Hmm… We can’t deny either of them. Since they’re 14 months apart, we get asked if they’re twins. Nope. Not even Irish ones.

11. Final Battle: Gimme Shelter – Rolling Stones

No Final Countdown? Interessting choice, iTunes. Doesn’t sound particularly good. Oh, if you missed the Clark Brother’s cover of this song on America’s Next Great Band or whatever, you missed some good music.

12. Death Scene: Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers

Awww. *sniff* It’s nice to know I’d be missed.

13. Ending Credits: Que Hiciste – Jennifer Lopez

I’m surprised only two Latin songs came up. I guess it would be even more obscure a mix if I did it off the net drive’s catalog of songs.

Thursday Thirteen: Conflict Building

13 Possible Short-Term Problems

I brainstormed a bit today on putting together short-term problems that would pull the hero and heroine together yes provide some conflict on why they might not be the best match at first glance. I’ll readily admit that many of these were heavily influenced by romance novels I’ve read in the past. It’s all in the details and the execution, right?

Unfortunately, none of these solves the issues I’m having with my problem stories.

  1. He won her family home in a wager and she’s been abandoned by her parent/guardian.

  2. He investigates her family in a matter for the Home Office while she leads a secret life to earn money for her family.

  3. He needs a wife/fiancee to keep the matchmakers at bay and she needs a betrothal to keep the fortune hunters at bay.

  4. In a case of mistaken identity, she cares for the injured lord who has a hold over her family and ends up liking him instead.

  5. In a case of mistaken identity, he infiltrates her gang of smugglers that she’s using for purposes of good, unlike the spies and wreckers he’s been sent to find.

  6. He needs a wife to care for his daughter and would like an heir but the widow believes she can’t have children of her own.

  7. She needs to redeem her father’s scholarly reputation and he needs her evidence to take down the evil relative who is using her father’s work for evil purposes.

  8. She needs to redeem her brother’s good name and he’s investigating her brother’s treasonous behavior.

  9. She makes up a betrothed and he appears to fill the role so he can conveniently spy on her family.

  10. He suffers a terrible battle wound and only she can stand up to him and bring him out of his depression. She’s available to do so, because her strength and shrewish ways have driven away all suitors.

  11. Their families have fought for generations, they’re set up to mend the fences and merge the family lines.

  12. Her father is killed in battle and the hero comes back to serve as her guardian.

  13. The bad boy stands between her and the noble goal of helping some orphans. He’s bored to tears and sets himself the challenge of seducing the proper miss.

Thursday Thirteen: Studio Ghibli

13 Studio Ghibli Movies We Love

Hiyao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli is as big or bigger than Disney here in the U.S. We own these thirteen (and probably others) in both the original Japanese and the American dubbed releases. We’ve watched most of their movies multiple times and the kids really enjoy them as well, even the less kid-i-fied ones. The exception is “Grave of the Fireflies” — this is one of the best and most depressing movies ever made. We did not let the kids watch that one yet.

Thursday Thirteen

It’s interesting to see which elements of the Japanese DVD covers or movie posters (shown on the right side of each image pair) are brought over to the states. It’s interesting how the American ones try to include the whole story while the Japanese ones go for one poignant moment.

DH went Tokyo last fall and visited the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Lucky bum. Today’s TT logo is one of the photos he took of the giant robot statue on the museum roof. You may recognize him from “Laputa” Or “Castle in the Sky” as it’s more commonly called here.

Castle In The Sky The Cat Returns
Grave of the Fireflies Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service Princess Mononoke
Nausicaä My Neighbors The Yamadas
Porco Rosso Spirited Away
My Neighbor Totoro Whisper of the Heart

Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana. I almost counted Arizona here in this batch, but I’d forgotten I’d visited a friend in Phoenix while I was a teenager (twice, Duh!). I didn’t count where I’d gotten out only at an airport to get on another plane, so no Nevada, yet. I’ve also been to Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, but they’re not states.

Thursday Thirteen: San Diego Tourism

13 Touristy Things To Do
In San Diego

Since I’ve got family visiting this week and I know of several people planning to visit the city, I thought I’d toss these up this week. We’re talking about going on the whale/dolphin tour thing tomorrow. DD asked why I didn’t include Disneyland (where we went on Sunday along with the rest of SoCal it seemed) and I told her that was LA/Anaheim, not SD. Ok. so La Jolla, Coronado aren’t in SD proper either and the Wild Animal Park is in Escondido. But they’re CLOSER! =P

Thursday Thirteen: Today In History

Thursday Thirteen

13 Valentine’s Day Occurrences

Happy Valentine’s Day! No sappy trivia today (see yesterday’s post for that)! Below are just a few of things that occurred on Valentine’s Day in history. There were a lot of others I thought were cool, but had to zap to pare it down to thirteen.

1 ) 278 AD Saint Valentine is beheaded, contributing in part to the origins of the Valentine’s Day holiday.

2 ) 1076 Pope Gregory VII excommunicates Henry IV

3 ) 1689 English parliament places Mary Stuart/Prince Willem III on the throne

4 ) 1766 Thomas Robert Malthus, British economist born.

5 ) 1778 The Stars and Stripes of the United States is seen abroad for the first time, flying on a U.S. vessel in a French port.

6 ) 1848 James K. Polk became 1st President photographed in office by Matthew Brady

7 ) 1889 1st train load of fruit (oranges) leaves Los Angeles for east

8 ) 1918 U.S.S.R. adopts New Style (Gregorian) calendar (originally Feb 1)

9 ) 1929 Disguised as Chicago police officers and detectives, Al Capone’s mobsters take out six of George “Bugs” Moran’s gang in a warehouse. The infamous event will become known as the Saint Valentine’s Day massacre.

10) 1967 Aretha Franklin records “Respect”

11) 1971 Richard Nixon installs secret taping system in White House

12) 1978 1st “micro on a chip” patented by Texas Instruments

13) 1990 Space probe Voyager 1 takes photograph of entire solar system

Thursday Thirteen: Cold Remedies

13 Cold Remedies

If you’re one of the many people suffering from a cold or the flu, the Mayo Clinic has a list of remedies that have been proven or disproven to help. Conveniently, there were thirteen items on the list.

Now, I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV or even impersonate one on the internet. If you want to know the why’s and wherefore’s of the Mayo Clinic’s opinions, go read their site!

Anyway, I hope everyone feels better soon!

Try these:

1. Hydrate to loosen phlegm and avoid dehydration. The only time I can drink Gatorade is if I’m extremely sick. As soon as I feel a bit better I can’t stand the aftertaste again.

2. Gargle with Salt Water to relieve a sore throat. My uncle still swears by this one. Of course, he also swears by rock candy and rye whiskey for sore throats too.

3. Saline nasal sprays (not decongestants) to ease stuffy congested noses. I’ll have to try this instead of Afrin for my next head cold.

4. Chicken Soup helps reduce inflammation and helps speed mucus. And canned soup results are almost as good as homemade. DD loves the double noodle in her thermos for lunch. Now.. if the school had more than T-W-O walls on their cafeteria, the kids might not get as sick in the first place, hmmmm?

5. Over-the-counter cold medications for symptom relief. DH swears by Tylenol Cold & Flu. Make sure they haven’t expired!

6. Humidity helps on many levels. Be sure to keep your humidifier clean and change the water daily.

Skip these:

7. Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, not viral infections.

8. Antihistamines help with allergies but can make cold symptoms worse by drying sinus membranes. Check you’ve got the right OTC meds!

9. Over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrups don’t treat the underlying cause of coughs. Yes, but being able to sleep is often welcome too.

10. “Starve a cold, feed a fever.” You’re better off staying hydrated and eating what you can keep down.

What can it hurt?

11. Vitamin C — no ideal dose agreed upon, too much can cause nausea and diarrhea. Who needs more when you’ve got the flu?

12. Echinacea — some people swear by Airborne, but no conclusive study on its benefits.

13. Zinc — depends on the type and when taken and many zinc studies are flawed.

So… what works for you?

Thursday Thirteen: Editing Headaches

13 of My Bad Writing Habits

1. “I’ve got” — yes, I talk like this, but gah, no one should write that way.

2. She verbed. / He verbed. — this is probably my favorite sentence structure. I know why, but breaking a decade+ of habit is hard.

3. Initial -ing phrasing. — If it doesn’t start with one, it’s the other.

4. suddenly, quietly, etc — not as bad as they used to be, but so much simpler to get the meaning across. Oh…. Show.. don’t TELL. Got it.

5. Lord INSERT_NAME_HERE — Ugh. Can we say cardboard nobility? Ok, so it’s not just for nobles any more. Still too many characters to name.

6. see/saw/hear/heard/feel/felt/looked/watched — Zzzzzzzz!

7. repeated words/phrases — What? It worked fine the last sentence? *sigh*

8. smiled, coughed, frowned, raising eyebrows, wringing hands — weak! overused! Boring… but so easy to slip in there.

9. would, could — not enough in the moment?

10. had verbed — again my head never seems to be in the moment at hand

11. word choice — close, only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. *I* know what I meant.

12. scene setting — what? can’t you just picture it? I did… *sigh*

13. it/there and other generic nouns — Umm. yeah. There’s something about it that’s just way too easy to slip it in there without thinking. *scuffle*

Thursday Thirteen: Barrington Interview

13 Questions for Hugh Leighton

I decided to take Dana’s advice and put the reticent viscount on the spot. Now, I didn’t force him to wear pink or call him “Bo Peep”, he knows if he doesn’t cooperate, he might just be attending the masquerade dressed as such. I think the Duke and Duchess of Bolster could be convinced to help him lose a wager where that was the forfeit.

1. How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
I am the sixth Viscount Barrington, my best friend is the Duke of Bolster and I’ve received no complaints from my looking glass nor the ladies.
2. How do you think others would describe your personality?
Don’t believe the scandal sheets! Half the time, they exaggerate until I can’t even believe I perpetrated such preposterous pranks. The other half, they omit the best parts of the story. However, society must find me an amusing fellow to have me around. I do keep getting invited back.
3. What do you see your role in life?
I feel it’s my duty to provide a bit of levity where there’s none to be found. London can be such a dreary place at times. People reflect their surroundings, you know. If not for me, people like Lord and Lady Threapwood would never have their noses tweaked. Deary people. Dreary.
4. How are you different from your peers?
I don’t pass on gossip and I’m very cautious, considering the source, when I hear it. I’ve been linked with numerous scandals over the years, but never has my name been linked with a woman’s in serious tattle.
5. What do you care most about?
Besides my friends and enjoying life? Not much, family is all and good for others, but it’s best when you can choose your own.
6. How do you deal with problems?
I usually try to laugh them off. If someone else has the problem, I try to make them laugh it off so they can forget about it.
7. What was the most significant thing that ever happened to you?
Must’ve been just after I was sent up to Eton. Was just after my mum passed and Grandmama packed me off saying my father was no fit role model. Anyway, I was set upon by a pair of bullies. Didn’t appreciate my teasing ways. James, er, the Duke of Bolster, stepped in and we’ve been close ever since.
8. What kinds of relationships do you have with the others?
As I mentioned, I’m close with the Wyndhams. Hm? Oh, that’s Bolster’s family. The Duchess and I are quite close; Bolster’s still jealous. Quite amusing, really. His cousins are sweet girls. A bit young for my tastes though. My grandmother? Oh, no, she hasn’t stuck her spoon in the wall yet. She still attempts to control my life and I try to stay just out of reach. She can be a veritable dragon at times. Particular lady friends? No, not at the moment. I try to stay out of reach of the schemers and matchmakers as well. No time for that.
9. What’s your opinion of the opposite sex?
If it’s not my title they want, it’s my money. Or both. Very few of them ever take the time to get to know the real men behind the titles they chase.
10. What would it take to make you change significantly?
It sounds trite, but I suspect the love of a good woman who accepted me for myself could reform my reckless ways. It’s not that I never want to marry, I just haven’t found the right woman. I thought I had once or twice, but we’ll just chalk those up to the ignorance and ill-preparedness of youth, shall we? Are we nearly done? Baring my soul like this is quite unusual and I’m expected at Bolster House.
11. Just three more questions, my Lord. Why do you think your story deserves to be told?
I have surprising depths for such a carefree fribble. No, I wouldn’t care to elaborate.
12. What would you would like to do that you have never done before?
I should like to find where I belong. I’ve always felt at sixes and sevens but what’s to be done?
13. What are you going to do now?
I’m off to Bolster House. The Duke and I are to play billards. And I dare hope this evening at White’s he shall be the one spouting horrid poetry as the forfeit. I’m quite tired of always losing to him.

Thursday Thirteen: Holiday Stress Anyone?

Thursday Thirteen

We did get a tree and our lights up on the house. The tree is still au naturale and we keep forgetting to unplug the lights at night. Who decided that adding more obligations to my schedule was a good thing? If there’s only 5 days until Christmas, that means I only have 12 days to finish up this rough draft. I WILL DO IT!

13 Reasons Today Is Chaotic at My House

1. DS’s Book report speech was due today. Had to scramble to get everything together since he’s supposed to dress up as the character. He lost his mouse nose we bought the other day, so at last minute I had to draw a nose and whiskers on with an old eyebrow/eyeliner pencil that was last used to do DD’s nose when she was a teddy bear in her kindergarten holiday show. She’s now in 5th grade.

2. DS’s Christmas party at school. 12:00 Sounds like it’s going to be fun. Socks filled with flour for a snowball fight, even!

3. DD’s Christmas party at shool. 1:30 — Much tamer room mom organizing the party. Gingerbread houses.

4. DS’s 4th grade holiday chorus performance. 6:30 pm. We have to have him there by 6:15 which means 6pm if we want to park.

5. I’m supposed to cook a healthy dinner in there too? Ugh. I’m sick of eating out.

6. It’s supposed to rain again today. People here don’t know how to drive in the rain. It’s scary!

7. The kids really want to decorate the tree tonight. They were ready last night with homework and everything done (ok except the speech stuff) by 7pm like DH had demanded, but HE ended up working until after 8pm. BahHumbug.

8. I went to the grocery store yesterday and have a fridge full of things that need repackaged to toss in the freezer. There’s some that SHOULD be done today.

9. It’s Thursday! Thursday Thirteen always adds to the chaos. =) But it’s fun.

10. I’m starting to panic over last minute gift ideas, or really any ideas at all, for a few people on our list. DH is worried about variety for the kids, but they’re gonna make out like bandits as usual.

11. I have a brakelight out on my van and should really get that fixed. At the very least I need to call and see when they can fix that and change my oil and all.

12. There’s only 5 days left!

13. There’s probably 14 kazillion other things I’ve forgotten or conflated.
