Shrinking Word Count!

I’ve been going through my WIP and zapping all the extra words that don’t add anything. Lots of “thats” and the like. On one hand it’s depressing to see the word count dropping, but it is reassuring to know that the writing it tighter and flows better overall because of it.

The hero is still proving elusive, but this will keep me busy for a while. I’m finding patterns that I’m apparently very fond of over using.  I’m trying to keep a list so I can refer back to it in the future. The IE is happy to be out of the box at last!

  1. It’s better to find the weak stuff before you submit, that way you stand a better chance later. Good writing is like a candy bar in mulch. It stands out.

  2. If it’s any consolation Kaige… I sat down to write yesterday, felt like I was making progress, then hit something before saving and all my new stuff went bye bye. When I went to rewrite it I pulled something out of left field and wrote around three pages only to look back and think WTF was I doing? So you can imagine what I will be doing today….

  3. Oh no! That’s not a consolation at all! Here’s hoping you whip it into shape and your characters behave for you! Bad saves suck. *hugs*

  4. Blah, I feel your pain. I am a ‘that-addict’ myself. It truly does make for a tighter read, so keep your chin up. 🙂

  5. Hmmm… wonder if there’s a badge for that? Life’s a little nuts here (as USUAL), I’ll have an update in the morning or later tonight.

  6. I forgive you (sorta).
I don’t know if they have a badge for that. But I will say I found a badge ribbon that says “Plays well with others” and I’m buying them for my local RWA chapter volunteers. I can’t wait to see their faces when I hand them out.
